In the slo mo replay, that dude looks to have been trying to get himself clear of the pinch point by hopping up into the back of that minivan. Can't tell for sure if he got all clear, though.

in the news article from the wreck, I think it said the guy that got hit head on broke a leg, and the other guy managed to get in the trunk/hatch to avoid getting smashed and had no injuries.
