View Full Version : RoB's Ton of Boost Build.... Day 1

It's here, the chevy's next "little" mota. Goal? Ton of boost and keep it together. I've gone pretty far on the stock stuff, really excited to see where I can go on a forged setup.
Looking to be a little different then most LS builds. Won't be the standard 370/408 iron block and 90+mm. It will be a small cube build. I want to keep the walls thick and the weight down. I plan to use some thick deck heads and let the boost make up for displacement. The way I always have. :cheers
The block is a L33 5.3/327 Aluminum block. Looking to get a light bore and clean up to get me started. Need some recommendations on a good local machine shop. Next will be ordering a forged rotating assembly and picking out the crank stroke.
The build won't happen over night, i'm currently in no rush as long as the 4.8L can hold on the rest of this year. I'd like to have it ready to fire off first of next year though.
Thanks guys, I'll keep this thread updated along the way.

what made you decide on the aluminum block? i couldnt imagine it will handle the load you are putting on the iron block now.

Nice Rob!
Simmons does all my machine work, their about the best around with mod motors. Not sure how the do on the GM stuff, but I'll tell you this, if you rush them you may have bad luck. if you let them just do it, ive never personally had a prob.

The sleeve have enough meat on them to be bored to 3.905 and still handle a power adder. I'm just looking to clean them up to 3.80 or so. Thats one reason I went 5.3 instead of ls1 was for the sleeve thickness.

And it would be nice if a couple people could agree on one known Ls shop. Lol

i'm certainly not questioning Rob, just curious. i cant see how an aluminum block could withstand the same or more power as an iron block, but i'm not daily driving a 600+whp 4.8 either, he is, so its obvious to me he is no dummy! i'm basically asking if he knows a secret...

No secrets, just personal research from the net to a couple LS engine build books. Examples from 8xxHP and over 1000TQ on a stock aluminum l33 setup to forged ls1's making over 1000HP, usually with the walls being the weak spot, not the block.
I've also read and been told the 5.3 was the strongest stock LS aluminum block. The have the most meat in the sleeves and I think paired with the right heads it should be one hell of a boost engine.
It's a different way of going about it, but I really like the 80+ pounds removed from between the front tires and taking a different path.
Only one way to find out.
Info on the bores from "Motorbooks/Workshop, GM LS-Series Engines"
Thanks for the info Brandon, ill check into those guys.

Well then I'll split that bad boy in half and bleed off what I cant use.
I'll likely start on the 2 bar and see if I can keep control of it. If not I'll look more into a computer swap as mine only goes up to 2-Bar.

Its a pretty simple re-pin to step down to the earlier PCM. Only a few pin differences from the green connector to the red.

i think your looking for someone that can do a good job honeing a block and I would be looking for someone that has a torque plate for a LSmota

Honeycutt it is. I'm still up in the air if I want to assemble it. It's a good chuck of $$$ to make a little error some where and jack up the whole build.

I had Jimbo go through my motor O ring it put it back together and dyno it. When I do go to the dragstrip I lean on it pretty hard and so far so good.

Talked to Bryan over at AES engines for about 45 minutes yesterday. He wouldn't get 100% onboard with me about a big HP aluminum 5.3L but didn't say it's wasn't a good idea either. Just some aluminum blocks are stronger then others and to remember it is a factory casting. We ended the conversation with him saying he would "just try it and it see what happens".
We did go over some assembly prices and I guess he thought I was ballin because we wasn't even close on prices.
This is the place I've been locked in on for a while for the assembly.
Either Eagle or Callies Compstart, i'm leaning toward Callies. Next is deciding on 328ci or do the 4" stroke for a 363ci.

After talking to a couple engine builders about my goals, I was recommend/suggested to go iron block. Goal was 1000 wheel HP, however with the weight and trans-brake setup, they "recommended" iron.
I decide on a budget build 5.3 bored to 5.7 short block by TMS with Callie rods/Diamond pistions, ARP mains. It's been solid to date.
