View Full Version : Looking for help determining what 6.2 I have.

So I recently picked up a 6.2 (I was told ls3) from a friend. Story to it goes it came out of a 2012 Vette with under 4k miles. I ran the number on the back of the block 12621766 and everything I can find says its a 09 or newer LS9. They were in the ZR1's with dished pistons I believe? The pistons on this motor have valve reliefs but no dish. The casting number on the heads are 823. Anyone know where I can look to determine what I have? Any advice is appreciated.

Pretty sure 823 is one of two L92 casting numbers from what I understand the 823 are the stronger of the two castings as well.

Definitely looks like a DOD/VVt motor so I'd say either a L92 (truck) or L99 (Camaro automatic).

Nearly positive it's not an actual LS3.

Arent L92s Iron blocks? I wonder if they've just gone to one aluminium 6.2 block and use it for L99, LS3, LSA and LS9 to save on tooling. Didnt they start putting LS6 blocks into camaros in 01 or something?

my LS3 heads are 0821.

Here's the only thing i can find about a "stock" ls3 piston and its just an ebay set of hyperpathetics.

welp google image search for L99 pistons shows exactly what you have.

No

Believe so

Didn't think I had to qualify the Camaro application with the 2010+ in this case, but....

I was just using that as an example of using other blocks for an application.

RodeKone, IIRC, i think they put the LS6 intake on the 2001+ plus camaro's,
that eliminated the EGR tube sticking down behind the throttle body, (it's the size of your thumb, cutting it off makes a huge difference)

that may have been what you were thinking.

I was leaning towards it being an L99 also but when I ran the number on the back of the block it started to make me scratch my head. The guy I got it from is adiment that it came out of a Vette. It does have numbers on the pistone I can read but can't get to show up on camera. Either way it has to come apart due to a wife deciding to get payback on her cheating husband (story I was told) I'm just trying to figure out what parts to use and what to change.

I think it has a VIN etched on the one pad. That should give you a clue.

The oil pan is not a Vette pan. It's a Camaro pan.

I checked the numbers on the oil pan and they come back for pretty much every camaro and the GXP G8.
