View Full Version : 08 Challenger SRT-8 Gets Magnacharged @ HHP Carolina

ElecTech

Scott brought his 08 Challenger to HHP Carolina looking to get a Stage II head/cam/intake package and while he was there asked about the new HEMI Magnachargers. Lucky for him our good customer Victor was there to take him for a ride in his Maggied Camaro. He had to have one and the rest is history.

We are very excited about this project and thought we would share it with everyone.

The build specs:

Magnacharger MP2300 tuner kit
HHP Stage II head/cam
Kooks LT headers w/ highflow cats
Corsa catback exhaust
ProTorque 3600 converter
Paramount performance valve body and SFI flywheel
Upgraded differential and stronger axels
DSS chromoly driveshaft
Hotchkis suspension upgrades
Custom HHP Carolina Diablo CMR tune

This car should be very streetable along with being very powerful. We can't wait to see the final numbers.

Getting some baseline numbers.

We are. He's getting an 09 Challenger diff, hubs, and axels. The 09 stuff is much stronger than the earlier years and is more than capable of handling the power. It also has a lower gear ratio.

Just a little update.

A lot has happend since the first post so we figured we would update you on the progress. The heads, cam, headers, and the Magnacharger have all been installed. Also, the RT differential, axels, hubs, and the rear portion of the Hotchkis suspension are installed. Getting closer!

The beautiful Maggie along with the 90mm TB and the very nice Moroso catch can. That blower looks right at home on the HEMI.

New RT axel on the left. Pretty easy to see where the increased strength is. These parts have shown to withstand up to 700 hp

Something about that picture just isn't right. Why would you have a shaft go through an area where lots of air will flow?

Why not use this blower kit?

Because that costs about 2000.00 more and at this power level there is little benefit. Besides, I have installed one of those on a 2010 Challenger and it sucks nuts! The install time is nearly double and they don't look as clean when installed, IMO. Basicly, this is the look the owner was after.

I would think if it were a major restriction, Magnacharger would have used a different design.

Wow.. The power level is little benefit.. If clean is a "stock look" then Magna Charger is an excellent product.

No doubt Magna Charger makes a quality product, though I'm sure KenneBell flows better. The 6.1L engine with the KB installed by multiple vendors made just over 1000 hp. Very impressive..

I said AT this power level, meaning the intended power level of this car. If this were a max effort build, the KB gets the nod.

Those 1000 HP 6.1's were not stock 6.1L engines, but the KB is certainly capable of getting one there. The stock pistons and rods won't tolerate much over 750 crankshaft HP for long. The cranks are forged stock and are good for much more.

That Magnacharger setup is very clean looking. I also noticed the aftermarket drive by wire throttle body.

I wonder if there's a company out there has brought to market any throttle cable conversions along with the necessary program changes to get rid of the drive by wire???

He's hoping for about 600whp. The Hemis have the potential to make that kind of power on motor, but they are RPM limited when used with factory ecu's. The TCM will command the limit (about 6200 rpm) and there is no real fix of yet. The last Stage II head/cam/intake package we did put 475HP to the wheels. Our HHP/BES 426 package will put about 650+ to the crank.

MOPAR Perf has an AEM based ECU that uses a cable TB for retrofits. Big money!

What are you going to use to tune it?

We use Diablo CMR for the Dodge/Chrysler stuff. We also offer it for GM if anyone has or wants a handheld, but most don't.

Got a little more project porn to share.

The DDS driveshaft assembly is in along with the Moroso driveshaft loop, the Kooks headers and highflow cats are in, and the Corsa Extreme exhaust is installed. The front springs and swaybar was installed and the SLP line lock was plumbed in.

With all of this completed the base calibration was put in so the fluids could be topped off and the tuning will begin shortly.

We still have a pillar gauge pod to go in and be wired, as well as, wiring the line lock, finalize the street/drivability portions of the calibration, and then the dyno tuning will take place. The owner was there to hear the initial start-up and is now REALLY antsy to get his car back, but we definately want to make sure the car is right and "debugged" before we turn it over.

More to come... stay tuned!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I wan't to clarify that you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get this level of work with us. I strive to put the same attention to detail into everything that comes into the shop. I'd rather stop building cars if I couldn't do it the way I feel they should be and I have told Jeff the same. Jeff trusts me enough to give me the final say on cars that leave, even though as the owner of the company, he could tell me to go fuck myself. I can't stand half ass and I thank him for seeing it my way.

Yea, it's a very common European design. Mercedes, who helped designed this platform, has been using the rubber couplers since the sixties, maybe earlier, and the GTO= Holden, so.

Yep.

Got the pillar pod in and the guages wired, the line lock is wired, and I started driving the car last nite. So far, all is well and the car is driving better than I expected. The part throttle/drivability tuning is underway and things look good for the dyno in the next couple days.

I still have a few small details to wrap up, like mounting the line lock switch and getting the race tires and wheels mounted, but the big stuff is done.

I'll try to post a few more pictures tonight.

Got another small update....

The last few details have been buttoned up and the street/ drivabilty calibration is completed, other than a few touch ups, and we did get it strapped down on the dyno.

The results? Well.... sadly we will all have to wait. As the session got going, it was becoming clear to me that we were off the mark. Seems the airflow improvements we made to the engine were way more than the little Maggie could keep up with at its current speed so, we are waiting on a pulley from Magnuson. It happens sometimes.

In the meantime, the car has been returned to its owner so he could enjoy it until then. I will say that even if we missed the goal we set to this point, the car still has a ton of power and is a blast to drive.

So I'll leave you with a few random pictures until next time.

Well, yes, but nothing real concrete that I'm ready to share until all the testing is done. Don't want to speculate on anything.

I will say I'm hopefully optimistic that I figured out what the issue was. Trust me, no one wants to close this out more than me.

I also want to take the opportunity to thank Scott for being very understanding and patient during this whole process. I have no doubt it has to be frustrating, but he has never really showed it. I know it has been for me.

Ever get this thing running right?

It has always run right, it just hasn't made the power we know it can... yet.

As of the last test session (before new years) it is now in the 500's. I had to go out of town for a week on business so the car was given back until I returned. It is now back in our hands and undergoing what I hope is the final tweak so I can close this project out. Just waiting on a gasket.

I should have another update this weekend.

I've only seen three of these in Charleston (All orange). One raced me from a stoplight when I didn't even know we were racing on US-17N heading into Downtown, one had its front end smashed in, and saw another on King Street. I hope to see this beautiful beast on the street sometime soon!

Well, finally it's time to close this one out.

It has been quite some time since we started this project and with holidays, business travels, and setbacks mixed in have exaggerated the time it has taken to finish it up. I will say that the car had been given back to the owner several times during this build so he could enjoy it during the holidays until we could get it back to figure out where the power was.

From the very start of the dyno tuning process this combination was falling short of the mark we had set for it in the beginning. In the end it turned out that many small things had added up to create a large loss in output. I won't bother going into all the details, for various reasons but it did reinforce the fact that just because you have all the right parts installed, it doesn't mean you are going to make power. It is amazing how something very significant can completely conceal itself and how several seemingly trivial things can stack up to cause losses as well.

The final numbers ended up at 568/521 STD correction 550 SAE, @ about 9psi. More could be had with Meth injection or race gas, but this is a ton of power for such a simple combination and with 500 Ft/ lbs of torque on tap from 3500 rpm all the way up past 5500 rpm certainly gets that big boy moving in a hurry.

I would like to thank Scott for keeping the faith and allowing us to handle this project for him. We have learned a great deal through this build and we look forward to working with him on his future plans.

What did it put down SAE? Nobody uses STD numbers so its hard to compare.

What did it put down SAE?

The final numbers ended up at 568/521 STD correction 550 SAE, @ about 9psi.

Nobody uses STD numbers so its hard to compare.

Says who? Half of the monkeys out there are quoting STD numbers.

It will see the track. That's the whole reason Scott brought you the car. IIRC, a young lady in a mustang beat him at Dorchester, and he got the modding bug.

I'll get in touch with him and see when......

That's a rough looking graph even with smoothing on 5.

Yep.

It was smoother with the 6lb pulley and I think it really needs more timing, but at the current boost it has really become octane limited. A couple of the dips are from .5 to 1 degree of timing being pulled by the ECU and put right back in.

If he decides to get a race fuel tune or add Meth injection, that graph should clean up, but that was as far as was willing to push things on the stock pistons and pump gas.

Hmmm I hardly ever see in the LS world. Most of time I see people posting STD when they want the numbers to look higher.

I must have misunderstood what Paul was saying. Can't wait to see the car. Tell Paul to call me (Buddy) when yall go again. I'll bring the Trailblazer. Really wanna put a spanking on Paul and that damn Marauder.
