Just rescued this three year old rottweiler this past weekend. His name is Uconn Jack Daniels, I'm guessing the original owner was a whiskey and basketball fan. Old guy is dying of cancer and had to give him up to a shelter because he couldn't handle the dog anymore. The shelter promised to find it a good home, but when he tested positive for heart worms they had no choice but to put him down. My wife had a rott for 13 years but had to put her down a couple years ago due to health reasons, and fell in love when she seen ole' Jack. She called the shelter to see about adopting him only to be greeted by the meanest b*tch ever, who told my wife that she will never see this dog unless a rescue came to stop the euthinization scheduled in three hours. My wife went through her connections and in 15 minutes got three junctions put against the shelter to stop all euthinizations scheduled for that day. A rescue went up to Myrtle and got Jack, along with three other dogs who were scheduled to be put down, and met my wife in Georgetown to give us him.
Thought I'd share, he's a big baby. I got to spend about a year with her last rott before she had to be put down and she was a big baby as well.

I love Rotts and German Shepards. At one time growing up we had 5 shepards. We even bred them and sold them to police departments for a little while.
We also had a huge rott and his name was Goliath.

Handsome dog. And so great that you were able to save him from being euthanized and give him a wonderful home and life.
I love big dogs like Rotties, GSDs, etc - had a German Shepherd growing up, would love another some day.

Isnt heartworm treatable? I remember having a black lab that had heart worms, the vet did a treatment and got rid of them.

Yes it is, one of two ways: Give him a treatment all at once which instantly kills the worms but they disperse through his system which causes a higher risk for clotting and dieing. He would have to be completely non-active for a month, heart rate couldn't get up at all. The other way is a heart worm preventative in a little higher dose to kill them over time, would go back in six months to check and see if they are getting better or not then continue, although there's a chance that in the first six months they could all be gone. He hasn't had them for long and is only in the beginning stages of it, so we are going the route of long term so there isn't a chance of instant death.
We had a great dane a few months ago but he had demidex mange and I was highly allergic to him so we gave him to a dane rescue in Indiana that a friend of ours run.

Ok we did the instant treatment. I think thats all they had back in the mid 90's. He came out of it ok.
Good luck with fighting the heartworms.
