LSX swap...questions

so i am starting to entertain the idea of swapping an ls into my 99 gt since my mota is fawked. and i know there are alot of guys on here that have done the swaps in fox's and what not and im just wondering what all i am going to need? will i need to have a custom harness made to use my factory gauges? what transmission should i use?

outlawts 12-21-2012 09:20 AM

Want fit

BAD BOB 12-21-2012 09:22 AM

you can buy a standalone harness for like 500 and that will run the motor and trans (if needed). the only way to use your factory gauges for like oil pressure and water temp is to make you factory sensors fit in the LS motor. the easiest way to do the swap is to get a kmember or swap mounts for the swap into you car. and you will need a set of headers for the swap too.

i guess i could buy aftermarket gauges for that stuff, but as far as my speedo and tach? will it just be something i have to mock up?

BAD BOB 12-21-2012 09:36 AM

im sure your factory tach wont work off the GM tach signal, and the speedo as well

LXtasy 12-21-2012 10:18 AM

I believe dad has a tach signal inverter piece that he is not using that you can exchange some money for. I say go for it. I have entertained the idea of a mustang in your bodystyle and doing the swap.

1SMKN99 12-21-2012 10:20 AM

i figure either ls with ported heads and a cam or build the 2v back and turbo it.

LXtasy 12-21-2012 10:21 AM

Ls, cam, and turbo. DONE!

ShawnBoyMoody 12-21-2012 10:25 AM

I believe the LS will bolt to the 2 valve K-member with a little egging of the bolt holes....

1SMKN99 12-21-2012 10:28 AM

and as far as the trans goes?

ShawnBoyMoody 12-21-2012 10:37 AM

Not sure on a newer car except that I know AJE makes everything you need to do the swap. Im rear is probably gonna have to be custom made or come from AJE.

ForceFed4g63 12-21-2012 10:41 AM

You need to get that 5.3 on CL.

jmd 12-21-2012 10:45 AM

what happened to the forged shortblock you had waiting to go in?

1SMKN99 12-21-2012 10:45 AM

i found a ls1 with trans in bluffton for $1000

i still have it, but for the price i could part out that, my cams, get the heads fixed and sell, and my intake and shit i could pay for a cammed, ported ls swap and make moar powa

however...my father bein a ford tech for 20 years...may disown me for putting a gm motor in a mustang lol

A guy down here that has a pair of new edge GTs with LSX motors. One of them is running the stock k_member in it. I will try to get more info from him next time I see the guy.

I vote you keep it Ford though man.

Miles dont matter, those 5.4's will last 800,000 miles with the pistons and rings thats in them, their Mahle same as the GT 500's. Its the rods that are the weak link in those motors and its after about 600 to the crank that their on the edge.

If I remember correctly the (I am sure several people on here will know) but most the 03 C-heads had like 4 threads for the spark plugs and the driver side head had a recall (blue stripe on the head meant it was serviced?) For cooling issues. So if you plan to run boost and dont want to blow out your plugs its something to check / fix before they go in.

1SMKN99 12-21-2012 12:01 PM

he said they are the ones that have the 8 thread

blubyu87gt 12-21-2012 12:10 PM

Might not be a bad deal then. If it has everything to swap. Otherwise I would go with the Randy route. 5.4 that fugger and roll put. Might even be cheaper then the 1800 if you go the junk yard route.

what about the navi heads then the cobra lower manifold setup and run a 76mm turbo how the silver truck is setup?

Qwik_Sn95 12-21-2012 01:45 PM

Same boat. Everyone does it shits old. The problem not going fast with ford stuff is user error not the platform. SBFTTFMF

Sorry. If you want a Chevy. Then buy a Chevy. If Chevy don't have the right car to keep their motor in, then don't ruin some other brand with their motor. :bigthumb:

yota 12-21-2012 01:47 PM

Stock bottom end 5.3 (stock block, rods, crank, pistons, ring gap, rod bolts, etc)
Cam
Valve springs
Push rods
Head studs
Stock 243's
S400 76R
Powerglide

:finger: I was actually thinking about a LSX twin turbo Lightning the other day...I think that would be the ultimate!

1SMKN99 12-21-2012 01:48 PM

everyone does fox swaps. i have seen very few people do it with a sn95 frame. and i never said can tgo fast with ford stuff, you can go fast cheaper with a gm motor.

For resale of the vehicle it does.

No Im pretty sure 2 valves suck. Swapping an LS in is a huge improvement lol.

yota 12-21-2012 01:59 PM

i'd pay more for an lsx swapped new edge with a tubular k than one with a stock k and a 2-valve anyday of the week, and twice on sundays

I do like the Navigator swap idea tho. There was a carbed navi powered fox on pass time a while back that was badass.
