Ford rear ends (8.8 or 9in)
What year(s) 8.8 or 9in should I be looking for, if it even matters? I am starting to look for junkers that I can chop up and rebuild for my car.
|
If you can fab up the 8.8 I would do that.
They plenty strong stock, plus they are lighter and has a less power loss of a 9inch. |
Chevy fast, ford tough
|
73-86 ford 9in are like 65 inches long. Our fbody is like 64 3/4. Thats the closest. Others are like 61 1/4 which would work too, but would need diff rear rims due to back spacing
|
Thanks, thats what I was looking for. Anyone recall which 8.8's had the better axles in them?

I need to do something soon. I have been handicapped by this junk 10-bolt for some time now.
I really want to start exploring my options and get something started before this summer. I refused to pay 1500+ for something I can probably build cheaper. Plus, I will need it with all the changes that will be taking place. |

8.8 requires modification to the axle tubes. You cut the tubes off your 10 bolt and machine them to fit on the 8.8 then axles 9- requires just the cutting of all the mounting hardware on the 10 bolt. http://www.currieenterprises.com/ces...E.aspx?id=1595 |
Yeah, I have seen a ton of the 8.8's with the axles machined.
I think a 9in would be cheaper to build, plus I have the resources to have everything cut and welded up. The major expense would be the purchase of a center section and axles. |

I would buy a 12bolt chevy tough with chevy stuff, works just fine for ashleys car

you aint blown it apart so there should be no handicap yet

i have a couple 9 inch rear ends. one i wanna say is a little over 60 inches wms to wms
|
with the right ends your brakes will bolt right up. get axles and a center chunk. would be set really. and get the brackets welded on
|
may as well buy this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/9-inc...Q5fAccessories
with the 8.8, by the time you buy the rear end, buy the torque arm bracket, get the axles cut and resplined for your width, buy c clip eliminators, change the axle tube ends to fit your backing plates, and all the brackets, you could buy the 9" and have good axles. throw together a junkyard 3rd member (I think kevin has one) and you're set. with a 3rd member, gear, spool, pinion support, and yoke, you would have about $1400-$1500 in everything and it would hold whatever you throw at it |
spool?

Dont forget, with the 9inch rear you have to change your drive shaft, so there is another $300 or so

Spool seems too much for Matts daily driver. Unless he doesnt plan on daily driving... |
Strength-wise, a GM car 12 bolt is on equal ground with a Ford 8.8. They both actually use the same rear pinion bearing. There is a difference between the car version 12 bolts and the truck version 12 bolts. The car 12 bolt is more desirable because it uses a larger diameter pinion shaft. The truck 12 bolts are not as strong as the car ones.
4x4 Ranger 8.8s had 31 spline axles, whereas the 2wd ones had 28 spline axles. 3.73 was a popular ratio among the 4x4 Rangers. Full size truck 8.8s were all 31 spline with bigger carrier bearings and larger carrier internals. |

Only the fx4 rangers came with 31 spline axles in 8.8. The 4.0 v6 rangers came with an 8.8 but only 38 spline.
Explorers all had 31 spline axles. Rangers are 56-1/2 inches (1990-1992)wms 58-1/2 inches (1993-2009)wms and the explorers are 59 1/2" wms . I hate to disagree with you Gerald. But everywhere I have searched that is the info on the 8.8 in ranger/explorers I have found when doing the swap for the s-series |
Older rangers that are 4x4 had a 3.73 option too. Not just FX4. My Explorer axles had 3.55s. Its was a 91 Eddie Bauer 4x4.
FWIW |
Thanks for all the info guys! Tyler... let me know how much you want for a housing.
|
Spraker racing enterprises out of Mooresville NC sent me this e-mail.
A HOUSING AND AXLE PACKAGE WITH MOSER 31 SPLINE AXLES BRAND NEW HOUSING AND LARGE WEB CENTER WITH DOM TUBES BILLETT HOUSING ENDS 5 ON 4 3/4 BC SET UP TO ACCEPT YOUR BRAKES WITH A TORQUE ARM MOUNT IS 995.00. WE ALSO CAN SUPPLY 3RD MEMBERS AND BRAKE PACKAGES. CALL US TOLL FREE AT 877-273-6369. |
^^housing and axle packages for a moser were the same price from bob at epp when I bought mine. I ended up getting the moser 35 spline with nodular moser center section for 2100 shipped, but I have a spool.
My gripe with the spool is that there is no chance in driving in the rain over 20mph. |

sac up and go buy a housing and axles(9") and save your pennies by going and getting a junkyard pumpkin with the gears that you want and rebuild it.
at the most you will have to buy a rebuild kit and a locker!!! as long as you inspect it. |
S60 is a heavy bitch!
|
This is what i'm saving up for.
