My 11 second queen has to come apart

Well, another nice long trip to Carolina Dragway to run 11s. Thanks to Gerald, the Trans-Brake is installed, works great. However, new problems include the rims are spinning inside the tires even on a my test launch at 3100 that cut a weak 1.79.

Next run turned it up to 3700 and around 17psi on boost. Something was off on the two step though as it left at 4200@17psi, shocked the rear tires hard and unloaded on the rebound. Also turned the rims about 3inches. Cut a 1.64, then all the problems. The transmission is for sure slipping, I was at 89mph and 3rd gear @6300RPMS. Even had to shift to 4th to get thru the 1/4 off the limiter. Fu**.

So, the only thing thats truly "built" on my whole setup is f'in up, should have tried a stock 4l80E.

However, made it home and beat up on a Heads/Cam GTO. Guess I should be thankful for something.

So I still have a shot at getting a 10 first? Sorry about your troubles Rob.

jmd 04-08-2011 01:10 PM

what color was the h/c gto? srry to hear about your trouble.

Foose04 04-08-2011 01:17 PM

Someone needs to get it done man, best of luck to you. You got the suspension/drivetrain working, that seems to be 80% of the battle on these heavy rigs. I've had the HP since day one, just not everything to make it work for me.

JMD it was red, said he was from Georgia. He's in the video after the first run.

manuals FTW. lol slips?, change the clutch. answer your phone bitch!

gearmesh, inc. 04-08-2011 08:58 PM

I never have had much faith in complete transmissions that are sold via long distance. When there is a problem, diagnostics are done long distance as well. Sometimes the whole transmission has to get truck freighted back to its maker for a solution.

I feel for you, Rob. Those people sent you the wrongly configured 4L80E transmission to you to start with. Then they want to try to modify it into the configuration that you originally wanted via long distance wrenching by me. From what I gathered on the phone with these guys this week, the transbrake valve body they sent isn't quite like a ground up built configuration that you originally wanted. They told me that they do modifications to the case passages when a transbrake configured unit is built in house. Obviously, your current case isn't modified in their usual manner, so they are attempting to do it all from the valve body side. Apparently, it still isn't right.

As far as transbrakes go on 4 speed autos, generally they don't release as fast as what folks are accustomed to in an older, simpler 2 or 3 speed auto. There are lots more fluid passages with longer runs and it takes more time for reverse oil to dump when the transbrake is released. You can't fight physics.

A 4L80E physically is one stout piece. But just like any other auto, valve body issues can wipe out a well built rotating assembly.

I don't think Rob likes vehicles with three pedals anymore... :poke:

What company built the trans?

LXtasy 04-10-2011 12:03 AM

CKPERFORMANCE built the transmission

Foose04 05-11-2011 03:17 PM

Game time. After some more research and talking with Gerald about everything, I decided to start fresh with a whole new build/trans. I decided on Jakesperformance, as his bread and butter is 4l80E's and theres some fast rides running his 80e.

I'll find out soon, got a couple days off to start the install, drink beer, then finish install. This is Jakes 2.5 Build, with billet forward hub and billet input shaft and with transbrake. He said it's a beast and one bad bitch, I hope so.

That said, 10's this weekend??!! Damn I hope this SOB can get the job done already.

Is that jack stand really on the shock or does it just look like that?

Foose04 05-11-2011 03:42 PM

Sure do, it's the only point I have to get the truck high enough to clear the bell housing under the side frame rails.

minytrker 05-11-2011 05:29 PM

So you still didnt learn a lesson about mail order transmissions? I would have went with Gerald hands down. Hope this one works out better and you can get your 10sec pass.

bwelch 05-11-2011 06:04 PM

I have a tranny jack if you want to borrow it. Its alot better than a floor jack.

Pm me if you need it.

Carlrx7 05-11-2011 06:06 PM

he has a bottle of jack he usually lets me drink, then it just falls on me. lol

bwelch 05-11-2011 06:14 PM

I was hoping I could borrow one of his 9 second slips one day. :hysterical:

Foose04 05-11-2011 08:13 PM

Well swing and a miss on the swap. The old transmission has a short tail housing shaft, the new one is long shaft, so it doesn't load as far on the output shaft. Couple searches and sure enough there is two different styles. No racing till next weekend now. Have to order the longer slip yoke and mod the DS again. Damnit.

LXtasy 05-11-2011 09:19 PM

You can't just unbolt the tailshaft and swap them over?

BigdaddyDupree 05-11-2011 09:24 PM

the output shaft on the transmission is actually a different legnth much like how the turbo 350's are. so to swap that the whole trans would have to be pulled apart. simple mistake. take a pic of it with your fiance so we can see how much the difference is please sir. lol

Foose04 05-11-2011 09:26 PM

Well another concern is the shaft on the old trans has a good 1/8th inch movement. Not liking that at all, the new one is tight. Something seems very off with that.

Foose04 05-11-2011 09:27 PM

This is what I need....

Joint and clutch got me a short yolk and modified the DS in one day. Maybe you will get lucky. Assuming that is who you are going with.

Too bad its not a 1310 yolk, I have the long one from my 3in DS sitting in the back of my Yukon.
