Tips on Fbody HVAC removal please..?

(2000 z28)

Been doing some weight removal out of the catfish. I've already got the ac compressor, dryer, condenser, and lines under the hood removed.

I want to get the whole box out of the firewall on the passenger side. I'm not concerned about retaining the heat.

From what I can see, there's no way to get it out without removing the dash.
I already removed the glove box and the kick panel below it
I'd prefer not to remove the dash, but I will if I have to.

I'm not opposed to just getting in there and cutting it out because I don't care about trying to sell the parts.
Just looking for pointers on the process. Maybe even pics of the process if you have it available.
Thanks for any input in advance!!! :bigthumb:

Yeah, i've found a few bits and pieces myself. I was hoping, wishing, praying for a detailed writeup. lol.
Thanks for the links.

This may be one of those jobs that I just need to get in there and do it to get it over with.

did you get this one?

I am trying to replace the box that is on the outside of the car. It's flanged and mounts against the passenger compartment into the engine bay.

From what I can see the only way to get it out is going to be removing my dash... what a pain that will be

sorry

I just found a pretty good one with pics on getting the dash itself off, but not about getting the hvac box out.

I've pulled the HVAC box and removed it several times. It's better IMO to pull the dash and remove it as a whole. I could give you a hand if you wanted to try it on a weekend. Make sure to buy the block off panel.

That sounds like a good to me. It would be worth the drive to Chas. to have someone help that's done it before.

I'm going to atlanta next saturday, but i'll be able to do it Sunday. I don't know how you feel about missing out on rest/football on sunday though, so no pressure.
I'll shoot you a PM later and we can work out the details.
Thanks for the offer!

I agree.

I kept the heat and just made the block off plate out of aluminum.

I will admit that it sucks driving the car on a rainy day w/ no defrost. I personally would never do it to a car again, unless it was a track only car. I can help for sure, but I'd seriously think about not doing it all, especially if its a DD, Just my .02 though.

-Mike

Jonathan 10-16-2011 07:44 AM

Definitely wouldn't be doing this if it were a DD.
It will get driven on the street, but only in good weather while headed towards the track. It will see the occasional weekend around town too.

Thanks for the advise/opinions. I appreciate it

send me pictures of your plate if you could. i still gotta finish mine. did you go from inside or out? i am probably gonna pull mine from inside the car and make a plate from that side just because i don't wanna pull the motor again unless i have to lol

Jonathan 10-16-2011 04:54 PM

This is UMI's.. http://www.umiperformance.com/catalo.../2114a_LRG.jpg

BMR makes one as well.

Jonathan 10-16-2011 05:47 PM

Speed inc also carries one thats $30 cheaper that UMI's. here's the link to it... http://www.speedinc.com/catagory.cfm...r%20/%20Safety

dkbmxer002 10-16-2011 06:23 PM

the problem is all of those involve removing heat...

You can make holes for the water lines to go from the pump, if you'd like to retain the heat.

Those are niece pieces, but I personally wouldn't pay that money for something that's so easy to make.

Here's a home made example with a hole left to run the heater core.

And another..

dkbmxer002 10-17-2011 10:36 AM

that's exactly how i wanna do it. i just am too lazy to remove the motor again lol

Jonathan 10-17-2011 10:56 AM

I've read a few posts that people have been able to do this with the motor in.

I'm sure it was a easy to do.. lol

cmd 10-17-2011 12:06 PM

I'd be interested in buying the whole a/c system.. box and all if it's not destroyed taking it out

Jonathan 10-17-2011 04:03 PM

I'll sell it really cheap since I didn't have any future plans with it.
Since you're interested, i'll pull it out in one piece then.

The air blew COLD when I used it. Took the condenser, dryer, compressor and lines off less than a week ago.
