School me on the 98 pcm swap
I won't have time to do it here in the next few months, but I'd like to see what I'd be getting into instead of going down the holley route. Can someone who has done the swap give me a link and any advice?
I know I'll need to have a 411 pcm, new license, and repin the existing harness. That's all I know. IIRC, I think there is something with the cluster that has to be done as well. I know Lorenz has done this many of times. I'm hoping he will chime in. I'd like the cheapest route, I don't mind spending time repinning the harness, just need to know what to repin. |
i have a 98 aswell, and i've honestly not seen any reason to do the swap. not that i disagree with it, i've just never been explained WHY.....
anyways. http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...swap-faqs.html |
The cluster still works, you have to do some adjusting in the tune to get the gas gauge to work correctly. Its not hard, just very time consuming. I do a few a year and seem to get a little faster on each one. Plan on 8 hours or so for your first time. I charge alot to do them because I really dont like doing them BUT I still do them. I charge $600 with a used 411 or 896 pcm or $500 with no pcm.
You are basically removing all the wires but 3 or 4 from each connector and switching them to the other connector and a different pin number. I got lucky years ago and had a company give me there diagrams for doing the re-pin, they just asked I dont post there info. If you dig around on tech enough you will find diagrams on what to do, the info on tech is similar to what I use. Its not hard to do if you take your time and pay attention. |
Agree. I've done a couple and it is tedious.

What tool is needed to re pin it? I remember I researched this years ago and there was a tool that was needed, just can't find it now.

I didnt use any tool. removed the red/blue/green cover, push wire in and then hold up the white "tag" and pull wire out.

Take your harness and work on it while your gone. On second thought dont be wasting my tax dollars :hysterical: Just send me the the harness with a check and I'll have it ready when you get back. :bigthumb: |
