Need Opinions
 

I took the wife to the range today to shoot my new XD40 and her new Taurus PT738. Billy and I probably threw 150 to 200 rounds through my XD and loved every minute, what a smooth firing weapon! On the other hand my wife and I put 200 to 250 rounds through her .380 and I was none too pleased. Had several issues including multiple misfires, hang-ups, and slide problems. I thought since it was brand new never fired that it might need a solid cleaning and lubrication (which I did when I came home) then I'll take it back to the range and try her again. If the problems continue I will look into getting rid of it and finding her something different. So question is, what is a solid shooting gun, with a safety for a small women (5'1" & 90lbs) for concealed carry. Please debate, discuss, and throw in any experiences you might have.

I was going to get a Taurus, but ended up buying my 9mm XD subcompact instead. Never had a problem with it and intend to carry it once I get my CWP.

hollow points? ball? steel case?
cheap or brand name ammo?

if you bought the Taurus new, i would fire it again, then send it back to the factory.

on the gun forums, the .380's seem to be hit or miss for working GREAT...they either do...or they don't, and that goes for the Ruger and the Taurus.

some small gun makers want you to shoot ~100 rounds through them to cycle & break in the spring, it has to be stiff to work with such a small action.
so you may have just broke it in.

IDK, clean it, shoot some more, and report back.

Hmmm....guess I was right about Taurus after all. Sig P238 .380 if u want quality.

With this one it seems to be the case. My old Millennium .40 never caused me a problem and I threw a lot of rounds through it. I have been reading all over the internet this afternoon and it seems to be hit or miss with the .380. Either you get one that has no issues, or one that is nothing but problems? Thanks Lorenz!

ive noticed with smaller bullets there seems to be more jams , but never missfires the glock 40 is a light weight small handled gun , and allmost all my guns are ruger but never had a break in period i got a ruger 9 and never one single prob w ith it

Like i told you mike. Must be that pistol or do a complete teardown and clean again. Never had one single firing issue with kristens pistol. And we have shot a good amount out of that pistol. Now, i also clean all weapons after firing and i did a teardown of hers before we shot it.

If you bought it local, you can also take it back where you got it and discuss with their gunsmith on the issues you have had.

Agree with alot of posts here...new guns require a breakin and may jam during that break in. Smaller caliber weapons tend to jam more I assume due to the light weight of the cartridge. The ammo is very touchy in certain weapons, shoot several types and see what works for others with the same weapon. If all that fails...get new gun.

It will shoot any 38 round on up to 357. It's small, no snag hammer and works well with smaller hands.

I'd be happy to let you try it out. If you want, you can come to Quickshot this weekend as my guest and shoot the 651, bring your own ammo or try any of the loaner hand guns they have but you have to buy their ammo. Other than the ammo, no cost to you.

Ken, does it have a safety, other than your finger?

revolvers really are the safest weapons to carry. i however do not like the enclosed hammer, its alot more difficult to pull back.

was it Dale at East Coast?

No. But the double action is quite stiff, not foolproof but you pretty much have to try to pull the trigger as opposed to snagging it on something. You pretty much can't snag the low profile hammer either. Once it's cocked though it has a very light trigger pull. It can be locked though, comes with a small key to lock the hammer.

Quickshot has some smaller carry type loaners, Glocks and I think a Ruger SP-101. Like I said, I'd happy to have you as a guest and wifey can shoot the Taurus and anything else you bring and anything the range has, the only cost being the ammo.

I agree, an enclosed hammer is not as easy but IMO it's by no means hard. And with those who might be carrying in places other than a side or belt holster like in a purse, bag, fanny pack whatever there's zero chance it will snag if pulled quickly.
