wtb: rear end, D/S rear axle - 1991 chevy
 

it appears the old truck i have has a bent rear axle on the driver side (rear fender is folded up) because I have a nice little wobble about 35mph.

it is a bit annoying, but nothing major. in other words, it ain't bad enough to pay $500 to fix it, but for $250 or so, i might would.

what would be the cheapest way:
-buy a complete junkyard rear end, and put it in my truck
(labor: bleed brakes, prolly have to change over my brake pads on both ends..hate drums)
(bad: lose my gears: think i have steep gears now, it peels out way too easy)

-buy a complete junkyard rear end, put the D/S axle in my rear
(labor: pay Gerald)
(bad: "might as well" put a posi in it)
(good: keep my gears, keep my brakes)

-buy a used axle somewhere.
(bad: used = junk...there's a reason they sold it....)

-buy one new axle somewhere.
(bad: costs?)
(good: do the axle & a posi, have a truck that drives awesome, with steep gears, that takes off from a light without one wheel peel)


it's a GREAT truck, and patching a few odds N ends on it will make it awesome. but at 222k miles, you can reach the point of "diminishing returns" real quick.

Buy complete junkyard rear would be the route i would go

All i have a 8.8 explorer or 7.5 s10

I chased this ALL OVER... since rear panel was dinged in, i figured it was axle

put'er on jackstands per CHP rules, won't axles, turned straight & true.

DS was wobbling up & down.

Ray & I did a tranny mount, a front U-joint, and a new rear seal.

still wobbly.

Robert / Griffin Transmission did a o-ring on the speed sensor, and worked a kink out of the front joint.

still just a tiny bit.

had DS balanced, and new rear u-joint.

still just a bit.

got rid of the big jeep rims & tires (they were on with spacers)
put on OEM rims & tire sizes.

and BADDA bing BADDA boOM!!

fixed it, the ole girls runs out SMOOOTH...


so the moral is...keep spending money till you get it fixed :(

i sold a mustang that had sat with a couple of flat tires for awhile. before selling it, i pumped up the tires. new owner took it down the road and said it almost shook him to death. turns out, the tires had come loose from the bead just a bit when flat, and got some water in there. -which added a couple pounds of off balance weight in each one. had a new set of tires put on and the tire guy got soaked. ha ha ha

I've had a 33 inch Bogger fill with water and make me think the truck was coming apart....

I actually do have a Silverado 10 bolt rear, but the diff has been welded and the driver side axle broke off in the diff. It's basically just scrap.

neighbor has a Jaguar convertible for sale, good looking car.

had a flat tire on it for weeks, finally saw him outside, i told him "you GOTTA keep air in it, or drive, or the cords will bust/wrinkle and destroy that tire."

he looked at me like i was crazy.....

flat tires make a mess when you try to run them later...



our car will flat spot the tires if we let it set for longer than about two months.
goes WHUMPA WHUMPA until you get them up to temperature long enough to warm up & flex back in shape.
