posi diff install (for Silverado)
Looking for opinions/advice
Will be home soon from yet another paid "vacation" by Uncle Sam to a pos country and have been considering buying an after market unit for my truck (2000 Silverado 4x4, 6 inch RCX lift kit & 35's, how Original huh? lol) Anyways pretty much convinced on the 3" body lift & elec fan conversion but the diff thing is something Im kinda looking for outside opinions. I know this isnt a 4x4/off road forum but theres alot of other experience on this form... With that said, any input is appreciated. Considering doing it myself at the house but also am just considering bringing it to a shop and having it done. Not sure if Monte C still does this kinda stuff and am a bit leary/hesitant about LC 4x4... Thanks guys Rob |
Masterbend muffler can probably knock it out for you. Bad Bob on here.

Yeah, we can handle just swapping out the diff.
I like the eaton truetrac diff. |
Throw some 4.10s or 4.56s in it and never feel those 35" tires.

Arb air locker FTW
|
Lincoln Locker FTW
|
Shoe Locker?
makes me think of all the funny names for places on the ship: Gun locker Fart locker Rain locker Snot locker I vote for a locker if you are gonna USE it 4x4. FWIW, I would put the locker in the front, because all your weight is on those tires. uselss comment: a Posi in the rear will make it slide around sideways in the rain. an open diff just does a one wheel peal in the rain, not very dramatic, but your corn locker don't get all puckered up when the back of your truck swings into the other lane of traffic. |

Silver-Dollar Damn it! I was hoping to try and ignore the idea of throwing 4.10s in  True, and You're also right, 4.10s would be perfect for that setup... Not sure if Monte C would have the time to do all that or what it would run $$$ wise. I appreciate all the in put everyone is offering though, definitely food for thought! :bigthumb: |
I wouldn't waste time swapping in 4.10s in the front and rear, go 4.56 and don't look back.
|
I hear Griffith Transmissions does good work!

The 4.56's kinda scare me a bit. Idk I do go up to NC and sometimes w/ the truck so 4.56s w/ 26 gal tank of 89 or 93 would add $$$ up...by the math the 4.10s would make much more sense...at least what im thinking at the moment:? |
I would go with 4.56's over the 4.10s. Changing gears on 2 axles does get a bit expensve, though..... If it were mine I would buy the Eaton Truetrac (formerly Detroit Truetrac) or one of Auburns higher end units for the rear. If you don't plan on off-roading the truck just leave the stock front diff in it. You do not want a locker in the front of a daily driver truck.
|
Damn, now 4.56's are weighing heavy in my mind...looks like theres only (roughly) a 180-240 RPM difference running highway speeds of 60-80 mph...(between the 4.11's & 4.56's)
|
4.10 isn't worth the swap. 4.56 with 35s will be good. Few local guys have ran 4.88 with 35s knowing that eventually they would go bigger with tires.
|
Recomendations considered! So I now know 4.56s are whats goin in. Any recommended shops? Contacted 2 SC shops but didn't know if theres any local places(obviously workmanship & quality are Paramount)...Any comments on that "4x4 place in the low country" (hint hint)?

Gearmesh?
|
nathan, I was talking about an air locker in the front, only engage when needed.
and leave the rear open wheel, so it don't do donuts in the skreet. would that balance out the cost? |

Not aware of Gearmesh, any info on them? I also know of a place on Cross Country road that I believe does axle/diff/drive line work...anybody know anything or where Im talking about...or is that place Gearmesh? |

If he plans to try any off-roading, that peg-leg rear is going to suck. I've never had any issues driving with the rear locked/welded/a spool......it just takes some caution in wet/slippery conditions. |
