Looking for a new built short block

Hope all is well with each of you:cheers I'm looking to turn the boost up on my KenneBell. I want to get an engine that can handle the power. My goal is alot of power without using race fuel. Thiking about running 20 pouinds of boost through the KB. Is that gonna be possible with a build block with no race gas? Thanks for any insight guys-Shane

i ran 21 pounds (kenne bell 2.6) and 100 shot on mine- stock motor. if i remember correctly it made around 700hp and 750ft lbs torque.

slowgreen99 07-10-2008 09:30 AM

it was 30lbs, and 125 i believe. He lifted the heads twice and cracked the block the last time. i would not recommend that.

i had a friend when i was at NTI with a whipple on his, he had everything except bottom end and his made around 800 with about 26lbs of boost

But Wes were you and Donnie running pump gas? Shane wants 20lbs on pump gas..

i had 3 tunes- pump gas, race gas, and race gas and nitrous. Donny did not run pump gas.

20+ pounds of boost will start to test your fuel system. it's really best to go return style if you want to make that much boost. and the power it will make at 20+ pounds is useless unless you do a ton of other supporting mods. i would stay around 15-18 if it were me.

my car would spin the tires at over 100 miles an hour on the interstate when i ran my 17" in. wheels and drag radials. when i ran Donny on the interstate when he had his vette- my tires broke loose and the car hit the rev limiter at the top of fourth gear- however fast that is. no need for all that power.

i also would highly recommend that you pick your tuner carefully when running alot of boost on pump gas. i am not going to dog anyone out, but i can say that upstate south carolina is damn sure not the place to go with it.

lol, easy now- they might threaten to sue you.

Modular Powerhouse in Atlanta is second to none. I have never been to Dan, but i can tell you that it doesn't get any better than Modular Powerhouse.

20 pounds and pump gas do not mix very well. Take it from me I know.

Mine lived for a few months like that. The head gasket finally let go, blowing a chunk of the head with it. After tear down, we found that I was slowly damaging the pistons, valves, & guides with all the heat. Sad thing is my tuner told me not to run it like that.

Shane your stock block can take most anything that 2.2 has to throw at it. There are plenty of guys running 18-20lbs making 620+ rwhp throught the stock motor on pump gas and having the motor live a long life. You just need to make sure you have enough injector, pumps, etc to support the power. Obviously you're not going to be able to maximize that kind of boost with pump gas as the timing is going to have to be turned down a bit to prevent detonation. You could also buy cases of torco to mix in with your pump gas to give you a little safety margin.

Appreciate all the inputs guys. I hear our pistons melt at like 700hp so just wanted to make sure everything was strong enough. Not sure if I mentioned my past 1 year headache but after I installed the KenneBell I blew the head gaskets automatically. Pretty sure it was damaged before I even got the car back cause it was already puking fluid and overheating. So I sorta have the money and was thinking like turbos or bigger supercharger or bigger better block with the 2.2. Was even considering a 5.4. What would you guys do with 10 grand and an 04 Cobra? Thanks again-Shane

Current Mod List
2.2 Kenne Bell
singe blade KB throttle body
kennebell boostapump
diablo predator
diablo mafia
3.4 upper
4lb lower
jlt cai
bassani mid with high flow cats
borla stinger cat back
60lb injectors

With that kind of budget I would go turbo with a nice fuel system. going that route you can make 700+ on pump gas and 800+ on race without lifting the valve covers on the motor.

LXtasy 07-10-2008 04:23 PM

mmmmm turbo

Darryl Buckner 07-10-2008 05:11 PM

Navagator 5.4, good internals, blower or turbo. You can't beat that cubic inch for torque, and last time I checked a Cobra is no lightweight..

Darryl Buckner 07-10-2008 05:14 PM

But in hind site, there is probably a few other things that will need to change with going to the 5.4. Like 6 speed stuff, ect. Hell Wes's Cobra ran really good, and I don't think he had all the crazy stuff Donnie had. 10,000 might get you there, I think he even had the IRS still..
