What should I do?

Aside from buying parts, what can I do to the ls1 motor I have? Ive got it on the engine stand. Im about to start cleaning it up, chase out the threads, turn it over, and change the oil pan.

What cheap or free mods should I do while i have it here?

NO CAM, NO HEADS JOE! This is a stock motor for my Monte.

Port the TB, do the TB coolant bypass mod, and remove all the AIR & EGR crap. That's about all I can think of Rob.

-Mike

Edit: If you wanted you could check the front and real seals and also change the oil pump, but that be more than you want to do? It's just easier to do at this point IMO. Also new poly motor mounts.

timing chain, oil pump, arp rod bolts would be worth it while you're in there, honestly i would try to pick up a used 224 cam or somthing small, you can find them for around $100 or so, front and rear seal, maybe a hone and re-ring, do the cheap stuff while its out of the car so you wont have to go back through it.

Got the EGR/AIR stuff off. Need to do the tb coolant by pass. Motor mounts are custom poly. Oil pump maybe, rear seal definitely. Front seal maybe.

I know you said no intake, but an ls6 intake doesn't cost too much and I know where you can get a good deal on one.

No offense zac but i have to set a limit for myself. There are a million "while your in there" things to do, gotta know when to stop. Ive done it before.

But on a good note. The motor only has 90k miles. Its been sitting up for 4 years, sealed. I took the oil pan off to change to a different one and everything inside was spotless. Cylinder walls still had crosshatch, pan had zero signs of metal. Timing chain was tight from what i could see.

Carlrx7 09-18-2010 04:12 PM

i agree with a 224 or even a ls6 cam

Matts94Z28 09-18-2010 04:42 PM

At very least do an LS6 intake. I also think a 224 or LS6 cam would be a nice mod to do while it's apart.

Matts94Z28 09-18-2010 04:43 PM

Oh... and paint it green.

Not good enough. If Joe owned it I'd negotiate for you, then you'd get a good deal

-O'Doylestein out

Edit, I love how everyone says do a cam and fails to mention the accompanying springs, pushrods, gaskets, and all the other crap that goes along with it. I guess they missed the "cheap or free mods" part if the thread?

Carlrx7 09-18-2010 05:19 PM

50 bucks and you can have my ls2 cam, springs/retainers and pushrods

Are you going to install them too?

MonteC 09-18-2010 05:41 PM

Joe talked me into an intake. But thats it!

AverageJoe 09-18-2010 05:50 PM

You can do the cam cheap too, I solved the spring problem for you.

O'Doyle SUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuucks.....

Well i want to know who is going to install this cam?

1 Slow Z 09-18-2010 07:29 PM

I simply answered his question. I guess it really all depends on your idea of "cheap".
