Ford rear ends (8.8 or 9in)

What year(s) 8.8 or 9in should I be looking for, if it even matters? I am starting to look for junkers that I can chop up and rebuild for my car.

If you can fab up the 8.8 I would do that.
They plenty strong stock, plus they are lighter and has a less power loss of a 9inch.

Chevy fast, ford tough

73-86 ford 9in are like 65 inches long. Our fbody is like 64 3/4. Thats the closest. Others are like 61 1/4 which would work too, but would need diff rear rims due to back spacing

Thanks, thats what I was looking for. Anyone recall which 8.8's had the better axles in them?

9 inch is less work really. More weight though

I need to do something soon. I have been handicapped by this junk 10-bolt for some time now.

I really want to start exploring my options and get something started before this summer. I refused to pay 1500+ for something I can probably build cheaper. Plus, I will need it with all the changes that will be taking place.

By the time you get through I bet youll be like why the hell didnt just buy a moser, strange, mwc.. etc.

8.8 requires modification to the axle tubes. You cut the tubes off your 10 bolt and machine them to fit on the 8.8 then axles

9- requires just the cutting of all the mounting hardware on the 10 bolt. http://www.currieenterprises.com/ces...E.aspx?id=1595

Yeah, I have seen a ton of the 8.8's with the axles machined.

I think a 9in would be cheaper to build, plus I have the resources to have everything cut and welded up. The major expense would be the purchase of a center section and axles.

I just want to find one with a 4.10 gear and just bolt the thing up. Truck prob has a locker already. Prob last a decent amount of time. Plus I know a guy with i think like a mid 80's 9 inch.

BigdaddyDupree 02-02-2011 09:54 PM

i have a couple 9 inch rear ends. one i wanna say is a little over 60 inches wms to wms

BigdaddyDupree 02-02-2011 09:57 PM

with the right ends your brakes will bolt right up. get axles and a center chunk. would be set really. and get the brackets welded on

1998ta__1991rs 02-02-2011 09:58 PM

may as well buy this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/9-inc...Q5fAccessories

with the 8.8, by the time you buy the rear end, buy the torque arm bracket, get the axles cut and resplined for your width, buy c clip eliminators, change the axle tube ends to fit your backing plates, and all the brackets, you could buy the 9" and have good axles. throw together a junkyard 3rd member (I think kevin has one) and you're set. with a 3rd member, gear, spool, pinion support, and yoke, you would have about $1400-$1500 in everything and it would hold whatever you throw at it

spool?
