Harley tech needed

2003 sportster having some issues. Bike is back firing, hard to start and no
power at times. Apparently most of the shops are backed up because of Daytona and I need this thing running asap.

Have you tried the adjustments on the side of the carb? My dads bike had been sitting for a while and he went to run the bike and it ran like shit. It back fired, seemed like it would get fuel sometimes and not others. He adjusted it ad it was good to go! I'd go ahead and replaced the plugs also

Well crazy thing is it runs perfect sometimes. For instance, left work for lunch,(Hudson Nissan) rode to chic filet. Thing was cutting out and did not think I would make it back. Ate me some lunch and got back on and rode perfect back to work. Its so random I do not think its carb related.

i think his jets were gummed up, and turning them cleaned up the gum/varnish and let it run.

sounds like carb is intermittently working.

does it have a bowl on it, that you can drop & clean, and maybe squirt it full of carb cleaner, then put it back on, and run that thru the bike.

I don't think its carb because its runs like a champ sometime and every
carb I have ever worked with - it either runs good or it doesnt. To be honest I have not really opened this thing up to much cause everything on it is expensive as hell. My father in law passed away and left me the bike so I can't sell it and I dont want anything to happen to it. There is a time to say, i you don't know shit about it, don't touch it and thats kinda how I feel. My zx6r, shit, I did everything on it and did not bother me a bit.

given that line of thought, it isprobably power or ground to the coil.

FWIW, harleys are just two cylinder tractor motors.

there's not really a lot to them.

if you need it bad, go buy a $50 service manual from the dealer (or advertise for one on CList)

but, if you can wrench decent, i would just pull the coil, check the connections,

pull the air cleaner & bowl off the carb.

the parts for it are not much more expensive than any bike, really.

the dealer should have anything you need on hand, but you can buy every thing 20% off on line.
