Metal flange to plastic tank. Even with the O-ring it is still a pretty solid connection.
Sometimes the price you pay to be a baller. Those pumps raise hell outside the tanks, I can't imagine they would be much better inside. I'm sure you have already upgraded your wiring, but I have seen low operating voltage make them growl like crazy, as well.
Not sure complaining will do much good unless they are advertizing it to be smooth and quiet. You may get them to exchange it in hopes that you got a bad one, but I think it may just be what it is. Still a very nice looking set-up. definately big time.
