Default Trying to start the car

Ok trying to start the car tonight. Just wanna check some things with ya'll. First off my battery is reading low. Its old but i just wanted to give it a try lol. It reads around 11.7. I know on the starter theres a wire that goes to the ign switch. When i test that for voltage i really dont get anything. Is that b/c of the battery? Another thing when i try to jump the starter using a wire from the battery feed nothing happens. Im assuming this is b/c of the low reading or a bad engine ground. Any input? Thanks!

A full battery should read 12.7 volts. If you have the heavy guage wire going to the starter you shoul be able to jumper between the heavy cable and the small wire from the ign switch (in neutral) and have it spin over. If not you may have a ground issue. Check grounds from battery to the engine and engine to firewall or chassis. 11.7 SHOULD turn over at least.

No, the SURFACE where the ground wire touches the body needs to be cleaned as well. Don't rely on the bolt to form the bond, TRUST me.

What about your neutral safety switch or clutch safety switch? Hooked up?

if you are just jumping the starter than NO, the vehicle will not start. The ignition switch will open the current to go back to to the fusebox and open the relay for the fuel pump and your distributor, coilpacks or whatever. Your starter is only a momentary switch to get the others working in conjunction with each other
