Default Oil pressure

Is a valuable commodity in cars and I have none of it. For what ever reason I lost oil pressure Tuesday. I FEEL like it is probably just the pickup tube has come loose from the pump. Tonight I pulled the oil filter off and turned the engine over. NO oil came out of the filter feed. The only thing between the filter and the oil in the pan is the pump and pickup tube.

When I got the car it had the wrong flywheel on it and shook like a dog tryin to shit a peach seed so I feel like the massive amounts of vibration it endured till I figured out the problem has caused the pickup tube to loosen.

Now I get to pull the pan off ( not a fun job ) and see what I can find. Gonna get started on it next week I guess. If you folks hear of a tubular k-member for a fox that is UBER cheap lemme know. Now would be the opportune time to swap.

Remove the distributor and check the oil pump shaft and oil pump. Pump probally locked up

Been there done that. Shaft is fine. Not broken, twisted, etc.

Ok. So I am going to do this next weekend. I want to go ahead and pick up an oil pump so I have it ready when I pull the pan. Will a stock replacement pump work? Do I need a HV pump? I dont really think I do. I do NOT want to ever have to worry bout sucking the pan dry and starving the turbos..

What should I buy?

yeah you dont need a high volume or high pressure pump until you make tons of power. you will be fine with a stock pump

why not do a hv pump anyway? They arent much more, if any on pricing.

it could suck all the oil out of the pan too fast and then you have have a dry pan, therefore not very good lubrication ifor the bottom of the engine

I have never had a problem with a HV oil pump in a stock block 5.0 If anything run an extra quart and call it a day.

Ordered a 7 qt pan, pickup tube, oil pump and dipstick today. Hopefully do this this weekend.

HV. The pickup has a provision to keep it from sucking to the bottom of the pan and I will also be purchasing larger feed lines for the turbo this week If I can find them with the fittings I need. If not I'll make them.

Ok, update time.

I got the car up in the air. and started pulling stuff apart before a friend got here this morning. He got here, we got the engine supported with the cherry picker and after one broken socket (replaced with a good impact socket) we had the K-member off. Pulled the oil pan,

GOOD NEWS... NO MAJOR METAL in the pan, no brass, nothing out of the ordinary.


BAD NEWS... I feel like this day was honeestly a waste. We pulled the pickup tube, and oil pump, inspected and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. Put the pickup tube down in a bucket of water and spun it over with a cordless drill and oil pump driveshaft. Water flowed in full stream with no restrictions what so ever.

Basically after MUCH diagnosis my friend and I feel like without the engine running, only spinning over with the starter turning it the oil pump the pump does not spin fast enough to pump oil to the filter / rest of the engine.

What we think needs to happen now is again,, re-install the pump, pan and pickup that was on the motor, spin the pump IN the engine with a modified shaft and see if it will pump pressure to the motor.

The oil that cane out of the motor was clean, no major chucks, no bearing material. Assuming all works well with the pump re-installed I am stuck with the delima of.. leaving the parts that were on the engine in place.. or replace the entire deal (pan, pickup, pump, and dipstick ) with new parts I ordered last week. I can leave the stock style pan and pickup on and send this other stuff back and save 250 bucks.. or I can install the new parts and have piece of mind of a new higher cap oil pan..

if you plan to keep the engine then put the new stuff in. In slowgreen99 car just turning the motor over didnt rotate the pump fast enough to make pressure either. Putting a 5/16 socket on the end of a strong battery powered or a wall powered drill should let you know if things are doing right. Water is thinner than oil so that will make a difference but if yo put new pump in you shoulnt have any issues

Before you put everything back together, take a dremel and clean the slag out inside the oil pump. You will see this when you take it apart. The little rotor inside can get caught on it causing the pump to lock up after it gets some age/ mileage on it.

I took the pump apart soon as I took it off the motor today. Looked brand new. Turned fine by hand.

I figured I lost oil pressure when I cranked teh car, I heard the rockers making A LOG of noise several seconds after they should have gotten oil pumped to them and quitened down. Walked around the side of the car and gauge showed no oil pressure..

I checked the sending unit, its good. Gauge COULD still be messed up. Im going to get another good gauge from summit and stick on it before I drive it.
