Default Looking for info

So dads truck, 08ish silverado 5.3, has developed a slight skip from time to time:..usually around/just leavin idle..dealer though it was an Injector..pulled plugs and found one nasty one..scoped the cylinder to find good bit of oil...so they tell him the aluminum block engines can't be rebuilt...and quote $9k in parts and labor for new engine...he leaves...calls me...I tell him to go back and cus them out..he doesn't...says he's just gonna change the plug every oil change and keep goin...

Could be simple as valve guides?...rings or ringland?....

Thoughts and or next step?
