question about laying carpet

got hall & bathroom, bedroom on either side.

the hall part is about 4 foot by 2 foot

when they put new carpet in,
will they do two pieces, for a bedroom & the hall, then the other bedroom?

or will they do one piece that goes from one bedroom to other?


reason to ask: can i take all the crap and put it one bedroom, and have them do one room, move it back then do the other room?

or do i have to put all the crap in the living room & have them do it in one shot?

whats a good price on two rooms if I pull it up myself, and leave the tack strips & stuff down?

prolly gonna go to lowes and put it on Lowes card (spent my lunch money on a el kamino....) or, is that a huge no-no?

I have no idea. My GA home we had tile throughout the entire house. Our Summerville home is a new build and has carpet upstairs. Hopefully I won't have to deal with it any time soon. Lowe's just uses local installers. You may be better off calling around and getting quotes.

yeah, we were military and just always moved & left it to the next guy.

guess i will make some phone calls tomorrow & see how prices fall out.

the only'est good part of Lowes was on their work, they usually give you a long term guarantee (10 years on granite countertops?) where the local places give you a year or two, and lowes was only $400, so we went with lowes, just in case.

i was just wondering what people found out AFTER they had Lowes (or someone local) install carpet. usually don't know how bad you got beat till AFTER you paid.


example: buddy doing granite countertops this week.
he was DEAD SET against Lowes, and I told him about the guarantee, so his wife made him at least price check Lowes.

Lowes did the whole kitchen: linoleum, new cabinets, new sink, new granite for about $500 cheaper than any way he could do it, and he got Lowes guarantee on it.


to me, life is to complicated to NOT ask, and I have been to most of the guys on here's house, and most of them have been to mine, so we kinda know where we stand on stuff: need something good, but the real money goes in the race car....

local store:
-200 Labor
$665 carpet & good pad
+tax


Lowes
-97 labor
-365 carpet
-239 pad
~$700

-10% military discount
=$630

no tax, because it is considered a home renovation.

just for reference,

hard wood from Lowes / woodboys was $2800 as a "gues-timate"

they said ave $7~9 a square foot for hardwood:
$3.50 sq ft for material
$2.50 sq ft for labor.

so if hardwood lasts ~30 years,
and carpet lasts ten years, still be ahead by replacing carpet once a decade.

I do all the installs for woodboys, in the future i can definitely pass long the hookup on wood and labor. 20% off what ever product you want and probably $1 a sq ft off the labor. Wood is going to be initially more expensive but adds value to the home for 20+ years where carpet will add literally no value to the home (unless brand new) as its considered a throw away item that new home owners want replaced.

Also i can bet woodboys will be more expensive for product than any box store unless you price the exact same thing from the box store. They do sell the "standard" grade floors as seen in lowes and home depot but mostly specialize in higher end floors with much better quality and it tends to cost a little more.

Not to take away from any contractors here, but wood floors aren't super difficult to put in, especially if you go with laminate. You could save yourself a ton of money and add to the value of the home by doing it yourself. I did it at my house and it was surprisingly simple.

well, that makes sense, because the girl on the phone said if i came in, they could work the numbers out & do better on an overall price,
but they were backed up until June for an install date.

we having a function at the house soon, so time is of the essence.
my son in law did his, and still has my saw, so it would be awhile before i got my saw back...

Depending on home layout and what kind of install you are doing (glue,nail,float) they can be either very easy or easily screwed up. Ive seen both ends of a homeowner install, some that look great and some that the person should never have been operating a saw. Time is another big factor, what we can do in a few hours can take a homeowner months. We ALWAYS offer out our number to anyone who calls with install questions. Im a huge do it my selfer because everything construction wise is pricey and so much can be saved that way.

We are scheduling into July currently 6 to 7 days a week for us. It sucks for us and the customers that dont want to wait but we have been with them for 15 years and they (and us) dont want to hire on anymore crews for install just because it only takes a few bad jobs to get the word out about terrible install jobs. If you wind up going that direction or laminate and are going to do it yourself and get stuck give me a shout ill be glad to stop by or give you some advice.
