Under the circumstances of detainment they could have allowed the owner his short term freedom to detain his dog. However, the guy put his dog in danger but will only blame the cops. Loser here is the dog that was only protecting his owner which the cops should have addressed first before detaining the guy.

I had a 80-100lb female rotty come charging at me yesterday. I left my gun in the damn truck. I grabbed a 2x4" and startin yelling at her. She stood there barking and growling as I moon walked my way to my truck.

If I had my gun on me I would have gave her one warning shot then dropped her! Shit is very Intimidating watching a dog charging at you!

For some reason a Rottweiler doesn't scare me to the point of shooting it. They seem to be deterred by pain. Now a Pit Bull, I don't think there is much you can do to stop it's attack other than killing it. Pain does not phase them, they would laugh at your 2x4 even after you teed off on their head.

Most dogs that feel ballsy enough to charge me seem rather confused and stop advancing when I charge them back as fast as they are charging me. I haven't had the chance to try it out on a pitt bull yet, but I hope I never have to.

Dont care who says what about this. Yes the owner was to blame, but so was the cops. They did not need to kill the dog. What they could have done to prevent that came long before the dog even got out of the car. What it comes down to is cops like that have forgoten what there job really is. The are PUBLIC SERVENTS. Not public bullies.

Owner made it clear he was going to let them arrest him. ONE cop should have walked over to him and asked him if the dog was going to stay in the car. Even if he said yes. They should have then asked him to go over and roll the windows up enough that the dog could not get out. Why did it take so many to hand cuff a man that put his hands behind his back? That alone makes them look like the jack asses they are. Im not defending the owner by any means. But the cops were way out of line.

But that doesn't answer the question posed...what was the cop who had a big fierce Rotty that was lunging or snapping at him supposed to do? I'm not advocating him having shot it (especially 4x!) but his choices at that very moment were limited and they were already on edge given that the real situation at hand called for a SWAT team or whatever.

well, the cops werent beating the guy's ass, the dog simply jumped out of the car and ran at them. honestly it was just a bad sequence of events, imo. putting myself in the cops shoes, i would have most likely done the same thing.
whether its right or not, cops dont give you many options once the cuffs go on. dude could have reached in his car and pulled out an ak for all they knew.
having said that, most of them are indeed douchebags. so its also a good idea to not blatantly video them at a crime scene. they might try to bully you and your dog might wind up getting shot.

You asked what the he could have done, you didnt say when. If he couldnt think ahead any more than that. Then he shouldnt have that job. Thats the whole point. They dont think they have to because the are cops and how dare somebody question what they do.

I blame everyone that was just standing around watching the dog trying to jump out of the car for not doing anything.
