Default lisle 65600 5.4 3v spark plug tool...looking to borrow/rent

as the title says. I'm wanting to change the dreaded spark plugs in my 06 f150 and dont want to pay $68+ to use the tool one time (hopefully not even need it but have it on hand in case) to pull the old plugs and swap in the one piece e3 plugs so I never have to worry about this in the future.

anyone have one (or know anyone) I can bum or rent for a day or so?

i may sound stupid, but riddle me this.

i did the plugs in the 99 GT in my "my garage" pics,

and I just taped the spark socket to my extension using real thin strong clear packing tape.

it was a PAIN. one plug hole had a peice of trash in it, i had to fish it out with a bent up peice of coat hanger. took about 30 mins to fish that out.

was i supposed to use something special?

I sprayed penetrating oil on them, then the next day changed them out with a ratchet and socket.

completely different. the 3v engines have the notorious 2 piece spark plugs that like to break off in the head due to a design flaw.

people with as little as 30k on the engine have had them break off. the lower most part has very tight clearances on the head around it and carbon builds up in the space between it and the casting and it sticks. then when people go to change them, the cheap tiny crimp job on the plug lets go and leaves it in the head, sometimes with the porcelain.

people either deal with it and keep using the tool during plug changes or swap to newer (more $10-20/each) single piece plugs.

I have a feeling I wont be that lucky as I never am

since my secondary car is down with the dash ripped out for at least the next two months, I just want to have the tool ready in case the poo hits the fan.

but man its like $100 and oreillys wont rent the stupid thing....

got a couple leads on one to use but nothing definite right now.

My F250 has the 3V. How many miles on the truck? I changed mine at 80,000.

63k, just bought it last week.

want to change the oil, paper filters, plugs, etc so I'll know the service intervals and since past service is completely unknown to me and I'm anal that way.

did you vaccum the plug holes out, crack them loose a 1/4 turn, and let them sit in the penetrating oil overnight? or just soak them tight?

what did you use for penetration? oh yeah, did you lube the end shafts with high temp antiseize before you put them back in?

I ppryed them with Zep penetrant, drove the truck home and back to work, slowly loosened the plugs. They squeek and then free up. It's not fun. Good luck.

Autozone does the rent a tool. You essentially buy the tool. Than you can return it and get your money back. If you don't return it , well its yours because you bought it

So, here's how the guys at work don't break those plugs:

IGNORE THE FORD TSB!

Warm the engine up
Use a 12V impact to remove the plugs

This seems to soften up the carbon that gets the plugs stuck in the first place. They still break, sometimes, but it is rare when done this way. When you do it Ford's way-loosen the plugs, pour carb cleaner down the holes and let sit before slowly working them back and forth-you are pretty much guaranteed to break 6 out of 8 plugs.

I looked on their website and called the one on james island where i live and they had no clue.

guess I'll try the one by work here off of remount today at lunch. is it lisle brand or OEM brand?

i dont know of any store in town that does the rent a tool on that particular tool if you find one though let me know where i can recommend it to my customers. we had to special order the tool in so we could stock it

just went by the autozone on remount. they've heard of the tool but nobody in the area has it in stock or for rent.

the oreillys on rivers not far from remount does have the tool in stock but they want $100 for it.

just ordered it off amazon for $64 shipped.

also just ordered the e3.70 single piece spark plugs off summit racing since its the absolute cheapest for single piece plugs I could find but they're back ordered until 1/31 sigh. $89 shipped for all 8.

I want instant gratification dangit!
