Dont forget, with the 9inch rear you have to change your drive shaft, so there is another $300 or so

Strength-wise, a GM car 12 bolt is on equal ground with a Ford 8.8. They both actually use the same rear pinion bearing. There is a difference between the car version 12 bolts and the truck version 12 bolts. The car 12 bolt is more desirable because it uses a larger diameter pinion shaft. The truck 12 bolts are not as strong as the car ones.
4x4 Ranger 8.8s had 31 spline axles, whereas the 2wd ones had 28 spline axles. 3.73 was a popular ratio among the 4x4 Rangers. Full size truck 8.8s were all 31 spline with bigger carrier bearings and larger carrier internals.

Only the fx4 rangers came with 31 spline axles in 8.8. The 4.0 v6 rangers came with an 8.8 but only 38 spline.
Explorers all had 31 spline axles. Rangers are 56-1/2 inches (1990-1992)wms 58-1/2 inches (1993-2009)wms and the explorers are 59 1/2" wms . I hate to disagree with you Gerald. But everywhere I have searched that is the info on the 8.8 in ranger/explorers I have found when doing the swap for the s-series

Older rangers that are 4x4 had a 3.73 option too. Not just FX4. My Explorer axles had 3.55s. Its was a 91 Eddie Bauer 4x4.

^^housing and axle packages for a moser were the same price from bob at epp when I bought mine. I ended up getting the moser 35 spline with nodular moser center section for 2100 shipped, but I have a spool.
My gripe with the spool is that there is no chance in driving in the rain over 20mph. |

sac up and go buy a housing and axles(9") and save your pennies by going and getting a junkyard pumpkin with the gears that you want and rebuild it.
at the most you will have to buy a rebuild kit and a locker!!! as long as you inspect it. |
