I hate to disagree with you Gerald. But everywhere I have searched that is the info on the 8.8 in ranger/explorers I have found when doing the swap for the s-series

I don't see where you disagree with me, but I didn't reference any Explorer info in my previous post, just Rangers. I can't personally speak for all Explorers being 31 spline, but I have been into various Ranger 8.8s and noticed the trend: 2wd=28 spline, and 4x4=31 spline. I haven't had anyone bringing any Explorer rears to me to see inside firsthand about all of them being 31 spline, though. I'm not doubting the possibility at all - just merely stating that I haven't had my hands on one as of yet.

According to Strange, the Strange 60 is 20-25# heavier than the Strange 12-bolt. The 9.75" ring gear is virtually indestructible, and the gear losses (5%) are less than both the 12-bolt (7%) and the 9-inch (10%).


Theoretically, If 100 pounds slows you .1 in the 1/4, 25 pounds would obviously slow you .025. If you were making 350 HP to the rear and the DANA ate 5% of that it would leave you with 17.5 loss, 24.5 for the 12 bolt, and 35 for the 9". That means a difference of 7HP between the dana and the moser. If you say that 10HP nets you .1 in the 1/4, 7 HP would gain you about .07 which negates the .025 loss from the extra weight.

Secondly, one thing you may not think of with regard to added mass is that it can also come into play in power loss. More massive axles and gears require more energy to get up to speed, adversely affecting rear wheel horsepower. Other factors, like internal friction, play in as well, of course. This friction may be attributable to bearing properties, along with axle fluid viscosity and flow behavior, and can also be influenced by geometric concerns like the diameter of the ring gear (which is intertwined with the properties of how the ring-and-pinion mesh). Though the physics involved may merit a full-blown engineering discussion in a future issue, for now we decided to do before-and-after testing of both of these project cars on TTP's Dynojet for a quick comparison.
