Default Egr valve

My moms explorer has a cel and ran it and it came up an egr valve. Its an '04. When you start the car when its cold it wants to cut out but after 30 secs its fine and drives normal. Should i try just cleaning it out or replace it? Thanks for the help

try cleaning it out the ports that go to it. They tend to get alot of carbon build up

what was the code?

my guess would be an insufficient flow code, which is most likely a faulty DPFE sensor.

guessing never works though, there are ways to check things.

Heres what the print out from auto-zone says

The ecm has detected too little flow on the egr system
-blocked passage on egr system
-failed egr valve
-egr solenoid faulty
-failed egr pressure sensor where applicable
-failed egr position snesor where applicable

I'll try cleaning it, if not just buy a new one

If you can pull up live data, look at the EGR DPFE parameter. Typical no flow voltage will be around .5 volt. The earlier metal cased sensors were famous for reading below this when they are bad. If you are getting above about .5 volt, the EGR valve probably isn't seating all the way. You can cycle the EGR valve with a hand vacuum pump and watch to see if your EGR DPFE voltage tracks with it.

dont replace the EGR valve, its never the culprit on a ford.

its always the DPFE with that code. DPFE is only about $40 i think and a 3yr old could change it.

if you have the ability to do as gearmesh said thats the best way to test it. typically like he said the DPFE voltage sticks low.

with the truck running plug the exhaust and see if the truck stumbles or most likely stalls.
