The stacked plate coolers are more efficient than the older style tube and fin coolers. If space is a concern, definitely go for a stacked plate design.

I did a study a while back on the two different style coolers on a Silverado 4L60E I had just gone through. The radiator cooler had to be bypassed due to a converter failure, so the aftermarket tube and fin auxiliary cooler that was already on it got put to the test as a stand alone. I was seeing 190 degrees in stop and go around town in 75 degree air with it. I knew that wouldn't cut it for 20 more degrees of summertime temps, so I replaced it with a like sized stacked plate cooler. Ran the same test drive route again in the same air temperature as before and noted a 25 degree drop from the old cooler. Nuff said.

with the AC condenser still there?

my 3/4" thick cooler barely fits between the condenser and the hood latch beam. it could be mounted in front of the hood latch i suppose...

I just had the trans in my powerstroke done by rob. He put the cooler on it and then i added the temp gauge in the cooler return line back to the trans cruising down the road it reads 110 or so. When you pull off from a red light while the converter is unlcocked it has got about 150. I havent towed with it yet but im very happy so far.
