Default Air compressor

Looking to purchase an 60-80 gallon air compressor in the near future. I saw a thread from last year and a few guys were in the market also. Will probably come from lowes, homedepot or sears. Is one brand better an another, anyone have personal experience with what Not to get?

Anyone seen any sales recently?

Thanks

buy a quincy. they have them at northern tool. if those are out of the price range, i would search craigslist for a used quincy in good working order. industrial units like that have an 1800rpm motor instead of a 3600rpm noisemaker. you can run a big motor and a big compressor slowly to make the cfm, or you can run a small motor and a small compressor fast to make the cfm. one will be louder than the other, and one wont last as long as the other.

get an upright.

i have a laydown 5/20 cheapo. takes up a lot of space

it has been banging air since ~1998, i bought it from like a Harbor Freight or something for $175.
you can buy new regulators for ~$30 on ebay,
and there is a place on APhosphate that will put on a new motor or pump cheap enough (~$100?), i have had 2 repairs (prolly one pump & one motor?) and three regulators on it (contacts burn out, because it runs alot for die grinders)

in other words, you can spend a lot of money now for a great one, or buy a cheap one, and buy parts along to keep it running.

i intend to give mine to my son in law,and buy a 2 piece one soon (pump & motor separate) instead of the one peice one (pump built on end of motor)
i prolly have $350 in mine, for 14 years of air.

YMMV / HTH
just buy a stand up to same space

Ill keep that info in mind, they do have a 60 gallon for $700 and thats the max im wanting to spend.

Thanks

Ive seen "single" and "dual" stage compressors, does the dual just refill quicker?

I just got this one.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...6620_200396620

Cheap price and from what I have read they are reconditioned Kobalts from lowes. I paid for the 2 year warranty on top. It pumped up good and wasn't that loud. I am curious to see how long it lasts but for the price was worth it.

Also if you ship to the store it is free. They loaded it on the truck and 2 people can get it out of the truck.

That looks like a pretty good deal even with $35 1 year warranty. Ill do a little more reading. Thanks

i would still save up a little more and get a nice used quincy. they last forever, and after that you can rebuild them. a 2 stage means there is one big cylinder feeding into a 2nd cylinder which is a smaller diameter. 1st cylinder compresses it most of the way, and then the 2nd cylinder takes it from say 100psi to 175psi. this allows the 2 stage compressors to run at 175psi, while the single stage units may run at 125.

The one I have retails for about 2500. I paid 500 bucks for it used. Ive got another cheaper brand compressor that I got in a package deal and ive already had to replace the contacts and other electrical shit on it, and its louder.

Ive been using the champion for a few years and havent done anything too it.

Go see Mike Horton at CESCO off of cross county, he has some real nice industrial units that are comparable in pricing to some of the box stores. Best part is buying local with support after the sale
