Default 2005 Silverado Oil Guage/Pressure Issue

My dad has a 2005 Silverado with a 5.3. He let it sit for 3 days straight and went to drive it the other day and the oil pressure gauge is going crazy. It's jumping all the way to 80 pounds and then back to 0. Comes up to around 40 occasionally like it should be. He checked the oil and it's full. No noise from the engine like it's starving for oil. Did not quickly heat up like a no oil problem might show but he hasn't driven it to much because he's nervous about it.

Anyone else had this problem? Could it just be the stepper motor issue in the gauges? Any oiling system known problems that could show up like this. It's got about 130,000 miles on it and has never had a problem while he's owned it. It didn't have a problem before he let it sit for 3 days. Thanks is advance for the help.

Sensor or stepper motor. Get a Gm sensor first.

Stepper motor - If you replace one, replace all.

So I'm going to admit, I don't know anything about these ls motors other than what I've read on the internet. Where is the sensor for the oil pressure on these?? What's the cost on them from GM?

Yes, if it's stepper motors I've already told him to replace them all.

The oil pressure sensor is at the back of the block behind the intake manifold. Kind of a bear to get to.

Kind of like an old small block chevy? Since it's hard to get to that will be the problem! Always is.

Shawnboy - thanks for the info and pic.

Bad Bob - I'll see what dad comes up with. He's up by Aiken so I don't know if I'll bring the cluster down here or if he'll want to get someone up there to do it, if that seems to be the problem.

Id bet on the stepper motor. They all do it. Mine started with the fuel. The tach is doing it again right now.

Moody's right the sensor is a pita to get to, and if you want to get it out without breaking it you need a special socket if your doing it with the intake attached. The sensors are like 80.00 and the socket can be bought at autozone for around 15.00, but my vote is the stepper motor. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the video. I'll send the link to him. I think he is going to fix the stepper motors himself if that's the problem. He's very good with electronic repair. If it's the sensor I think he may have the shop he use's replace it. He said he was going to stop by and let them look at it so we'll see.

Well it ended up being the sensor. He just had the shop he uses change it. I think he was glad not to have to screw with it. Thanks again for the help.
