Randy, I like the old technology motors too. My old carb 2 stroke always fires. I have another boat with a high tech Evinrude and had to send the brain away for a rebuild to the tune of $700.
Keep in mind, the original Verados came out between 9 and 10 years ago and the current motors are far better engines and burn a lot less fuel than the earlier versions.
