Default What is a good camera for photography?

My wife wants to get into photography but she isn't sure which camera to get and neither am I. We aren't looking to spend a fortune, but I'd still like to see what "the best" costs. So what is a good camera for photography?

I have a Canon 40D, but only 1 decent lens. I like Canon, but any brand you feel comfortable with should be fine. Check out DPreview for some in depth reviews of cameras. Make sure you put the camera in your hand before you buy. I used to have the 350D (Rebel) and it's about 2/3 the size of my 40d. At first I thought the added weight would be a problem, buy I auctally feel the camera is easier to hold.

With that said the lenses are the most important thing. If I were to start over, I'd get a good used SLR, and put all the other money into lenses.

What kind of Photography will she be doing?

I don't really know what she wants to do other than start taking classes. I've got my hobby, I can't really say much if she wants to spend a few hundred bucks on a camera when I've spent thousands on my car.

But like I said to her yesterday when I walked inside with my Papa Johns Pizza, "see, you said the Camaro would never pay us back."

Start small, no reason to go pro style DSLR when it may just end up being a fad to her.

Anything Canon for a simple point and shoot, thats what she should start out with. Along with that, buy her some software for editing.....or download Gimp (its like a poor mans photoshop) http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Here is where I went to get my camera reccomendation, it ended up being a Canon SD200 (back around 2003)

http://forums.steves-digicams.com/

You can ask there, or just browse through his reviews.
Also, for your wife there are areas in the forums in which you can ask any sort of question....answers happen pretty quick too!

As for prices. www.newegg.com has great prices..... it's better to save more money from a warehouse than storefront (IE bestbuy CC hhgreg ect...)

I use a Nikon D40x with a pretty expensive lens ($750). The basic D40 or Cannon rebel will work great for you and even allow you to upgrade. Here a few shitty shots I have taken with the camera, which is Lisa's BTW.

That really depends on what you plan on doing. Most of those pictures were shot with a
Nikon 18-200mm VR. It's a great all around lens, but you could always start with something like the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED. ($160)

Here is a good website for your Info. http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm
