Default 7.3 powerstroke issue

Does anyone have any knowledge on the 7.3 powerstrokes? Mine quit running. It had been running fine with no issues, I left the house the other night and it made it about 500 ft and the check angine light came on. I decided to drive it around the block and bring her home but she didn't make it. It just quit and wouldn't start. I tried changing the cam position sensor but that didn't work. I plugged in a code reader but it's not showing any codes. It will fire on ether so I feel it's a fuel issue. Unfortunaly I really don't know how to trouble shoot this fuel system. Any suggestions are welcome.

You may need to get a hold of a modis scanner or an actual ford scanner. Some of the general scanners wont show some codes. I think the 7.3 fuel system is similar to the 6.0's so i would check the IPR (injector pressure regulator) sometimes the screens get dirty. Heres a link
Or it could be the ICP sensor (injector control pressure) LINK

Try to get a hold of a scanner before you start throwing parts at it.

Try to unplug the ICP sensor and see if it will run longer. With this unplugged the truck will run but in limp mode. Should narrow down your issue.

There is a harness that runs through the valve cover gasket, a friend of mine had his come unplugged on the inside. Not sure, but I think it made the truck shut off.

Well I tried another scanner today and it too was showing no codes. I also tried unplugging the ICP sensor but that didn't work either. I guess it's time to dig a little further and start tearing this thing apart. I'll Looking into the injector harness next

What scanner did you use this time? Check the fuel filter on top of the engine to see if its getting fuel. Unscrew the cap the start it back 1-2 threads, have someone turn the key on and watch for fuel to come out that will check to see if your fuel pump is working. That may help narrow it down to the injector driver or high pressure oil issue. If you can acquire a scanner that will show ICP pressure as your cranking it must be above 500 psi before the truck will start. If your IPR screen is dirty or plugged you wont get pressure either-this should be another easy check just unscrew it and check the end.

I used an Actron CP9580 Autoscanner Plus Scan Tool w/CodeConnect and ABS. Not a high doller scanner, but not junk either. I do get fuel to my filter bowl. The truck just cranks and cranks not even trying to start. I hate tearing into it without knowing which direction to look. I'm still tring to get a better scanner so that I trouble shoot a little better. Thanks for your help.

What year is your truck? The early 99's had issues with the HPOP.The easiest way to check this to screw a gauge into the oil gallery rail on the head. This is the rail your ICP is screwed into.Like was said before you need at least 500psi to crank. The thread size on the rail is -5 JIC male.I have some fittings and a gauge if needed.I will PM you my number.I ran into one truck acting like yours is and it turned out to be the HPOP.

I still haven't gotten it running yet. I was sick for a few day and I just started digging into it today. I checked the pressure of the HPOP and it's over 2000psi while cranking. I pulled the valve covers and checked the harness. While the valve cover was off I had the wife crank it over while I listen to the injectors. I didn't hear or feel any clicking coming from them. I'm thinking the my IDM (injector drive module) is shot, But i hate to purchase a new one without being sure.

My buddy ran one of these instead of the oem one because it was less than half price. He didn't have any trouble out of it. They rebuild the stock unit.

I did get the truck running again. I purchased another IDM and it started but still wasn't running right, and now the check engine light was on. But at least it would start now. I found a wiring schematic online and was able to use my multimeter to see what my injector resistance was at the Harness where it plugs into the IDM. Well even though I already pull the valve covers and checked the gasket harness, my multimeter was telling me that I had an issue on the passanger side. I then pulled the cover again and push in on all the wiring connecters. Testing it again showed that everything was now normal. I found that the injector harness where it plugs into the gasket had a clip that would allow it com apart. I took my heat gun softened up the clip, bent it out so that it would grab and not come apart again. I'm guessing that when I left the house and it started running rough, the harness had come apart and I was only on 4 cylinders, while tring to make it around the block to get it home it ended up frying my IDM. I'm just happy that it's running again.
