We work to current specifications and processes as well as work instructions, all of which must be verified against current engineering. If that stuff is not available we are violating FAA regulations. So....no web equals no work.

Looks like a 600pair cable.

I have had to work all night on several occasions fixing 2100 cables that have been cut. I remember one that was cut on 17 a few days before July 4th in '03 or '04 and it took 15 guys all night to fix. I was coming into the office with my truck and backhoe and happen to drive by as they were needing a tractor to dig up the cut cable. Needless to say I got stopped by my buddies and had to help out. I worked 24 hrs straight that time. I had to wait for a fresh person to drive the truck and tractor home after I had worked over the 15hrs. allowed to be able to drive the big truck in to the plant. A 2100 cable is 5" in diameter and weighs a lot.

We had 2 cut 1800 pulp cables on rivers ave. Took us a week of 24 hrs straight crews working. Had to tone every pair. It's easy to rack up a $20,000 bill cutting a big fiber like that.

There is a fiber optic cable that runs down 501 from Florence to Conway owned by AT&T. It controls the 911 service for a lot of the east coast. I have had to dig around it a few times. They always have a tech onsite and will only let us get to within 4 ft of the cable. IF its cut the tech will loose his job and the company that cuts it can be charged very high. We have been told that it cost upwards of $1,000,000 a minute that its out.

Our company sends bills out often. It depends on how big the cable is and how much outage we have but I have seen bills in excess of $100,000. They usually charge $.25 per scotchlock that is used.

Our fiber guy at comcast could do a 20 pair in about 12 hours or so (unsure if that is fast) .....lol they trained us how to use a fusion splicer.....after 4 tries I got a pass and did it (for one line). He made upwards of 90k a year at Comcast. Now hes working in the head end.


Its easy work, but tedious as shit....


The company I work for is going to pay for all 3 fiber certs for me. Then working on my CCNA.....should be nice to accent my resume with.

Look Joe I happen to disagree with you slightly. Let me assure you first, I don't stand up for everything Boeing does. Second, there is a big difference in being a Boeing (blue badge) employee and working for one of the contract companies (grey badge). The biggest difference is in job security. Contractors are generally paid a little more, but the benefits just aren't there. Because I work in final assembly, I see the things that get done wrong EVERY day. By everyday I mean several times a day some yahoo will do a job and then when it gets to me things don't fit or look like they should. Keep in mind that most of the jobs are done within spec, but because of the statement of work in my section the incorrect jobs become readily apparent. I have seen the same person mess up three jobs last week alone. I was so pissed off the third time I was really starting to wonder if he can read at all. Still today he has a job. I had a guy working for me in TX last year that left before the end of the shift and entered the full shifts hours into the computer. When my boss went to question him about it he was caught texting on his phone. He admitted all of this and just got chewed out. That was the first time I have ever heard of a company not firing someone for time card falsification. As of a couple of months ago this clown still worked for Boeing the guy probably still does I just haven't been looking for him. I could understand if either person was a really good mechanic allowing them a slip here or there. The only thing to chalk it up to is who the person is actually employed by. There are a few things that Boeing will walk you out for, but they do put up with a lot of shit that other places would fire you for on the spot.
Now for contractors you are in a completely different category. I have seen contractors get fired for things that you wouldn't even get a verbal reprimand for as a blue badge. I know this isn't something comforting to you, but it is what it is. I do think from your side that is probably the situation. On a side note I know of two people that got fired as contractors and still work there today. One of the guys got hired back as a blue badge after getting fired as a contractor TWICE before and the other the works for the same contract company he has been fired from once before.

No lie. I have applied for numerous jobs out there. I don't even get much of a phone call or "thank you kiss my ass" email. It is cool though. I heard a lot of those people that work there are premadonna's and complain that work is "hard". lol

From what I was told a computer scans the applications. Without certain key words you wont ever hear a thing. Redo your application with these key words: Ohio, back home, up north, moved, transplant, michigan, cold weather, rude, carpet baggers......also mention something about how well you drive on snow and ice. You'll get a call immediately.

Funny thing is I know the key words and they are all up in my resume. I've applied for over 30 jobs there and never heard a peep back.
